Apple Event 2026: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo Explained
Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo. We examine the confirmed features, UK prices, release dates and what the new hardware could mean...
iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Are Official
Apple has officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo at its September 2026 event.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable phone, while the two iPhone 18 Pro models introduce the A20 Pro chip, a new vapour-chamber cooling system, longer battery life and a 48MP main camera with variable aperture.
These are substantial hardware changes, but new technology also creates important questions about durability, parts availability and future repair costs. Here is what Apple confirmed and what the new designs could mean from a repair perspective.
What Did Apple Announce?
| Product | Main announcement | UK availability |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | 6.3-inch Pro model with A20 Pro, variable-aperture main camera and vapour-chamber cooling | Pre-order 12 September; available 18 September |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | 6.9-inch Pro model with the longest advertised battery life of the new Pro range | Pre-order 12 September; available 18 September |
| iPhone Duo | Apple’s first foldable iPhone, with inner and outer OLED displays | Pre-order 16 October; available 23 October |
| AirPods 5 | New open-ear AirPods with Active Noise Cancellation and updated audio features | Available 18 September |
| Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 | New health, fitness, performance and battery features | Available 18 September |
The standard iPhone 18 was not part of this launch. Apple’s September announcement focused on the iPhone 18 Pro range and the new iPhone Duo.
What Is New With the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max?
The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max increases this to 6.9 inches. Both support ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz.
Apple has moved to an aluminium unibody design with Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. The models are available in burgundy, glacier, silver and black.
Inside, the new A20 Pro chip is connected to a redesigned vapour chamber. Apple says the cooling system provides three times the surface area of the previous generation and helps the phones maintain performance during demanding workloads.
- 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max
- Super Retina XDR OLED displays with ProMotion up to 120Hz
- A20 Pro chip manufactured using a 2-nanometre process
- Next-generation vapour-chamber cooling
- 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture
- 48MP Ultra Wide and 48MP Telephoto cameras
- Up to 43 hours of video playback on iPhone 18 Pro Max
- 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options
The iPhone 18 Pro range starts from £1,199 in the UK. Pre-orders begin on 12 September, with availability from 18 September.

How Does the Variable-Aperture Camera Work?
The 48MP Fusion Main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max can physically adjust its aperture. Apple lists aperture settings of ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0.
A wider aperture allows more light to reach the camera sensor and can help in darker conditions. A narrower aperture can provide greater depth of field, keeping more of a scene in focus.
From a repair perspective, variable-aperture hardware adds further mechanical complexity to the camera assembly. It is too early to know whether this will materially affect reliability or replacement costs, but the complete camera module and its calibration requirements will be important areas to examine.
Apple’s First Foldable iPhone
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. When opened, it provides a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display. When closed, customers can use a separate 5.4-inch outer display.
Both are OLED displays, with ProMotion, an Always-On display and brightness reaching up to 3,000 nits. Apple says the inner display uses ten ultra-thin layers and a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare.
The frame and hinge cover use Grade 5 titanium. Apple also states that the phone has Ceramic Shield on the front and back, a scratch-resistant coating on the inner display and an IP68 water and dust-resistance rating.
- 7.6-inch folding inner OLED display
- 5.4-inch outer OLED display
- ProMotion and Always-On display technology
- Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover
- A20 Pro chip with vapour-chamber cooling
- Dual-battery system
- 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide rear cameras
- Up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display
- Up to 44 hours using the outer display
- Night Sky and Star White finishes
The iPhone Duo starts from £1,999 in the UK for 256GB. The 512GB version costs £2,199, the 1TB version costs £2,599 and the 2TB version costs £3,199.
Pre-orders begin on 16 October, with availability from 23 October. Full details are available on Apple’s official iPhone Duo page.
What Could the iPhone Duo Mean for Repairs?
The iPhone Duo introduces substantially more complex display hardware than a conventional iPhone. It contains two displays, a hinge, a flexible inner panel and a dual-battery system.
The inner screen is likely to be the most important repairability concern. Flexible OLED displays are complex assemblies, and damage to the panel, protective layers or hinge area could be expensive to resolve.
The Grade 5 titanium hinge cover and IP68 rating are encouraging durability claims, but they do not tell us how the phone will respond to repeated folding, impacts, debris or long-term wear. Independent durability testing and physical examination will provide a clearer picture after release.
It is also not yet known when genuine replacement displays, batteries, hinges or other parts will become available outside Apple’s immediate service network.
Tech Titans Manchester is not currently advertising iPhone Duo repairs. Any future service would depend on technical information, suitable parts and our ability to complete and test the work to an appropriate standard.
Conventional iPhone vs Foldable iPhone
| Repair consideration | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone Duo |
|---|---|---|
| Displays | One conventional OLED display | Flexible inner OLED and separate outer OLED |
| Moving components | No folding hinge | Grade 5 titanium hinge and hinge cover |
| Battery design | Updated conventional smartphone battery design | Dual-battery system across the foldable body |
| Cooling | Vapour chamber connected to A20 Pro | Vapour-cooled A20 Pro design |
| Likely repair complexity | Cannot be confirmed until examined | Potentially higher due to two displays, hinge and folding construction |
| Parts availability | Not yet established for independent repairs | Not yet established for independent repairs |
The repair observations above are based on Apple’s announced construction. Firm conclusions about repair difficulty should wait until the devices are released, disassembled and supported by suitable replacement parts.

Should You Upgrade to the New iPhones?
The iPhone 18 Pro range introduces meaningful camera, cooling and battery improvements, while the iPhone Duo provides a completely new form factor for customers who want a larger screen that still fits in a pocket.
That does not mean everyone needs to upgrade. Before buying, consider:
- Whether your current iPhone still meets your needs
- The condition and battery health of your existing phone
- Whether current damage can be repaired economically
- How much you would use the Duo’s folding display
- The substantial purchase price of the new models
- Insurance and potential future repair costs
- Independent durability testing after release
A damaged screen, worn battery or charging fault does not automatically mean that the complete phone needs replacing. Repairing an otherwise suitable iPhone may remain the more economical choice.
